Guéhi Stands Tall in Derby Cauldron
Manchester City's defence was always going to be tested at Old Trafford, but few could have predicted the script. Phil Foden's red card after 23 minutes left City facing more than an hour with ten men away to Manchester United.
What followed was a rearguard action that will be remembered for some time. Marcus Rashford hit the post before half-time, and Kobbie Mainoo did the same after it. The woodwork twice came to City's rescue, but there was nothing lucky about the resilience on show.
At the heart of that resilience was Marc Guéhi. The summer signing, alongside Rúben Dias, produced a performance that justified the faith placed in him. Guéhi was particularly impressive, reading the game with a calm that belied the chaos around him.
His half-time words to Peacock summed up the mood: 'We've reacted well, Clean sheet so far, so hopefully we carry on. Moving on as quickly as possible and focusing on the next action.' It was exactly the kind of level-headedness needed in a derby.
That focus was never more evident than in stoppage time. When Matheus Cunha crossed, it was Guéhi who came across to head clear. A small moment, perhaps, but one that preserved the points.
City knew all about his ability on the ball before signing him, but this was probably his best performance so far and certainly his toughest afternoon. The threat of Rashford and Mainoo was relentless, yet Guéhi stood firm.
And when City needed him most, Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a big save from Bryan Mbeumo deep into stoppage time to deny United an equaliser. The goalkeeper's intervention was as crucial as any moment in the match.
Elliot Anderson took the Player of the Match award, a deserving recognition for his tireless work in midfield. But on a day when City had to dig deep, it was the defensive resolve that will have pleased the manager most.
Erling Haaland scored the winner, of course. The striker's knack for the decisive moment is well documented, and here it proved the difference in a game that could have gone either way.
For Guéhi, this was a statement. A performance that showed exactly why City wanted him.
