Dias and Guehi: The Centre-Back Pairing City Have Been Waiting For

The Quiet Strength at the Heart of City's Defence

Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi have been named in Manchester City's captaincy group for the 2026-27 season. That's not just a nod to their seniority. It's an acknowledgement of what they bring to a side that, at times, has looked vulnerable at the back.

Both have been crucial to Enzo Maresca's setup, not only for the leadership they provide but for the roles they play in City's defence. Against FC Porto on Tuesday night, those roles were on full display.

City won 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão. Erling Haaland scored in the 47th minute, and while the Portuguese champions did manage to play through City's midfield on occasion after that goal, they never created a single shot on target. Not in the period between Haaland's opener and his second, and not for the entire match. Francesco Farioli's side were caught offside seven times. The linesman's flag also spared Gianluigi Donnarumma from conceding a penalty immediately after Haaland's first goal.

That's not to say City were flawless. They did leave openings for Porto to exploit. But the centre-back pairing of Dias and Guehi held firm, and their performances were integral to the clean sheet.

Guehi has been brilliant since the season began. He's been absolutely brilliant in all four games City have played, looking like a player who is now comfortable as a City player. Dias, meanwhile, has taken two games to get going, but his past two performances have been exceptionally strong. As City's captain, he's building into the campaign nicely.

Combined, they've been exceptional. Their partnership has been an underestimated strength of Maresca's side. As of right now, they are City's first-choice centre-back pairing, and their games complement each other. They've both earned that right with their performances.

Injuries, suspension and squad rotation will see Maresca's side take on different looks throughout the season. For now, though, Dias and Guehi look set in the starting lineup.

Heading into Sunday's derby against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the pair will be crucial to City's chances. The hope is that the way they led the defence against Porto is a sign of what's in store. If it is, Dias and Guehi will provide City a solid foundation from which to work against their arch-rivals.
