Foden's Display in Porto Suggests the Tide Is Turning
Phil Foden hasn't scored for Manchester City in 34 matches, yet his performance in Tuesday night's 2-0 win at FC Porto hinted that his luck might be about to change.
Foden was at the heart of City's opening goal, threading a sublime pass that carved open Francesco Farioli's defence. It was the kind of contribution that has been missing too often during a frustrating run in front of goal.
He also set up a great chance for Erling Haaland with a quality cross from the left in the first half, only for Diogo Costa to keep out the Norwegian's header. Later, Foden saw his own shot from the right saved by Costa — a strike he might have hit better.
Before being withdrawn in the 75th minute, Foden had been lively. His last goal came in City's 3-2 win over Leeds United on December 14, 2025, when he bagged a brace. Since then, the net has remained stubbornly out of reach.
There have been near misses. In City's 4-1 win at Crystal Palace, Foden registered two assists but also missed two great chances. Last weekend against Coventry City, he squandered another great opportunity.
Still, the assist for the opening goal in Porto — and the overall quality of his display — offers hope that the 34-game wait is nearing its end. If Foden keeps creating at this rate, the goals will surely follow.
