Manchester City left Old Trafford with three points on Sunday, but the story of the derby was written by the man between the sticks.
Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a 95th-minute save to deny Bryan Mbeumo and preserve a 1-0 win, capping a performance that Erling Haaland later described in terms usually reserved for folklore.
City had been reduced to ten men in the 23rd minute when Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. From that point, Enzo Maresca's side had to dig in against a United team managed by Michael Carrick.
The hosts hit the post twice. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both saw efforts come back off the woodwork either side of halftime. Enzo Fernandez also struck the post in the second half, and Erling Haaland's winning goal was incorrectly ruled in City's favour.
But the defining moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Fernandes slipped Mbeumo in behind the City defence. The forward took a touch and got a powerful right-footed shot away. Donnarumma saved with his right hand.
Haaland, speaking to Sky Sports after the match, was effusive. "What a save! What a keeper he is, I've said it plenty of times!" he said. "This wolf in goal, he looks a bit like a wolf, so to have him in the goal gives you so much confidence, honestly. In the end, he's a mad man behind there and we're so lucky to have him! He's a match-winner as well, so all praise to him!"
Donnarumma's reputation as a shot-stopper is well established. The Italian international has few peers when it comes to big moments, and this was another entry for the scrapbook.
City's ten men had fought valiantly, but it was the goalkeeper who ensured the points travelled back across Manchester.
