Enzo Fernandez: Two Written Transfer Requests, One £125m Move to City
Manchester City's £125m capture of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea was preceded by two written transfer requests from the midfielder, according to reporter Matt Law. The Argentina international pushed hard for the move before it was completed on Deadline Day.
Chelsea were also informed that Fernandez's relationship with all of his teammates had broken down, as reported by Matt Law. The breakdown in relations at Stamford Bridge added another layer to a transfer that had been building throughout the window.
Sky Sports reported at the time that the 25-year-old wanted to join City, while Chelsea maintained throughout negotiations that they would not sell him cheaply. The London club held firm on their valuation, but City eventually equalled the British transfer record to secure the World Cup winner's signature.
Fernandez signed a five-year contract, keeping him at the Etihad until 2031. The deal was finalised on Deadline Day, bringing an end to a saga that had seen the player force the issue with his written requests.
After completing the move, Fernandez said he "could not be happier" and described City as a club "built for success". His arrival adds further quality to a midfield that already boasts some of the best in the league.
Interestingly, none of the Chelsea players who remained at Stamford Bridge this season publicly wished their former vice-captain good luck following his move to City. A telling silence, perhaps, but not one that will trouble anyone in blue.
