Mubama's Asian Tour Earns Him Another Championship Loan
Divin Mubama's preseason tour of Asia with Manchester City was hard to ignore. Three appearances, two goals, an assist. The kind of return that tends to force a conversation.
The conversation has ended with Mubama heading out on loan to Southampton for the 2026-27 season, a move City confirmed this week. It is his second loan in the Championship, following a spell at Stoke City last season where he managed five goals in 26 appearances.
That Stoke stint was disrupted by a serious injury that derailed much of his 2025-26 campaign, so the tour of Asia offered a timely reminder of what he can do when fit.
What stood out most was his instinct for being in the right place. Both goals came from reading the play early, drifting into space, and profiting from a good cross or a goalkeeper parrying the ball back into danger. That sort of anticipation is not something you can coach into a player.
What remains a work in progress is his hold-up play. It showed in Asia, where the gap between his movement and his link-up work was occasionally obvious. The Championship is a physical league, though, and Mubama has already had a taste of that particular challenge.
Southampton offers him the chance to build on that experience, provided he stays fit. If he does, the raw material is clearly there.
