Barcelona's Summer Swoop for Gvardiol Confirmed
Barcelona wanted Josko Gvardiol. That much is now on the record.
A report from Mundo Deportivo has confirmed the Catalan club's interest in Manchester City's Croatian defender, an ambition that surfaced during the summer window. City, for their part, had no intention of doing business. The same report states plainly that the club were not prepared to let an important player like Gvardiol go.
He stayed at the Etihad. That was that.
Why Barcelona Wanted Him
The logic from Catalonia is not difficult to follow. Gvardiol can play centre-back or left-back, a versatility that appeals to a club shopping in the market for a defender. Mundo Deportivo's report frames him as an ideal replacement for Alejandro Balde, who could be on his way out of the Nou Camp after falling out of favour.
Should that chain of events unfold, Balde himself could be one to watch for Premier League clubs in the near future. A neat little loop, that.
Gvardiol is 24. He joined City from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023. Since then, he has shown his quality and played a big part in the club's success on the pitch. A key player, by any measure.
Uncertainty at the Etihad
What happens next is less clear. In the wake of City being found guilty of so many major Premier League financial breaches, it is not out of the question that the club are soon handed a huge points deduction or perhaps even expulsion from the Premier League.
That verdict, delivered last week, has left a cloud over the club. Gvardiol will surely be one of a number of City stars wondering what the future holds at the moment.
He is not alone in that. Erling Haaland is apparently being monitored by Real Madrid and Barcelona, according to the Sun. When the vultures start circling, they rarely circle just one player.
For now, Gvardiol remains a City player. Whether that holds beyond the next transfer window is another matter entirely.
