European champions cool their interest
Paris Saint-Germain have pulled out of the running for Rodri, according to reports in France. The UEFA Champions League holders had previously made contact with Manchester City to test the waters over a potential deal for the Spain international.
Le Parisien report that PSG are not expected to submit an offer during this transfer window. The club's management believe they already possess the best midfield in European football and have chosen to rely on the squad they have.
PSG retained the Champions League trophy last term. That success appears to have reinforced their conviction that no major midfield addition is needed.
Two remain
With PSG out of the picture, the chase for Rodri narrows to Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both Spanish giants have longstanding interest in the midfielder.
Real Madrid are reported to have already reached an agreement in principle with Rodri himself. Direct communication between City and Madrid took place earlier in the summer.
Barcelona's interest is genuine but operationally complex. Their ongoing financial situation makes a deal for a player of Rodri's calibre and contract demands a structurally challenging proposition.
Rodri is entering the final year of his Manchester City contract. That ticking clock ordinarily invites speculation, but City's position throughout has been to retain the player.
Enzo Maresca regards Rodri as central to the 2026-27 title challenge. The manager's first press conference on squad planning made no allowance for the midfielder's departure.
For now, PSG's retreat leaves two suitors — one with a reported agreement, the other with a mountain to climb financially.
