Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak are major doubts for Liverpool ahead of Manchester City's trip to Anfield on Sunday after the pair appeared to miss Thursday's training session.

Paul Gorst, the Liverpool Echo's chief correspondent, reported from the training ground that neither forward took part in the main squad session.

“Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak are major doubts for Liverpool’s visit from Manchester City after appearing to miss training today.”

Gakpo sustained an ankle injury during the Netherlands' fixture against Serbia, while Isak picked up a thigh problem representing Sweden. Both returned early from international duty.

Fears over Gakpo's fitness grew after his forced withdrawal, with initial reports suggesting potential ligament damage that could keep him out for weeks. Jeremy Jacquet was able to train.

Liverpool manager Iraola stopped short of ruling either player out but admitted both are injured. The situation leaves the club's attacking options stretched, with Hugo Ekitike already recovering from an Achilles injury.

Twenty-year-old forward Lewis Koumas is expected to step up and lead the line. The academy graduate has caught the eye with a series of electric performances for Wales during the international break, and could be handed the biggest opportunity of his career as Liverpool look to protect their unbeaten run at Anfield.

Summer signing Bradley Barcola and young winger Víctor Muñoz are also available as Iraola weighs his options.
