Deadline day drama ends with Gakpo staying put
When the transfer window slammed shut, Cody Gakpo was still a Liverpool player. The Reds had turned down an £80million bid from Manchester City on deadline day, and despite the Dutchman's openness to a move, he remains at Anfield.
Sources suggest Gakpo was keen on the idea of joining City, with Tottenham also holding talks as long-term admirers. But the 27-year-old is not one to sulk. He is reportedly happy to stay on Merseyside and is ready to get back to work under new boss Andoni Iraola.
Gakpo is not expected to cause any issues after he missed out on a move.
Instead, he is focused on continuing his strong start to the campaign, having already registered a goal and an assist in three appearances. Iraola sees him as a key figure, especially given his ability to play across the front line. Gakpo has shown he can operate on either wing or through the middle, a versatility that will prove vital across all competitions.
There was some interest in a move away, but Gakpo is not unhappy at Anfield. Under contract until 2030, there are no immediate concerns about his state of mind. Former Everton chief Keith Wyness, however, has suggested Gakpo may keep one eye on the January window.
City, for their part, did not leave themselves short. Both they and Tottenham made attacking signings late in the window, even if they missed out on their primary target. Spurs, in particular, are believed to have retained a strong interest and are tipped to return with a fresh approach in 2027.
For now, though, Gakpo remains a Liverpool player, and Iraola will be glad to have him.
