A New Era, A Familiar Demand
Josko Gvardiol has delivered a rallying cry to his Manchester City teammates, insisting everyone must "fight for this badge" as the club navigates a significant transition under new boss Enzo Maresca.
The Croatian defender's comments come after a demanding start to the Premier League season, which began with a hard-fought victory over Bournemouth. But Gvardiol was quick to temper any early optimism, admitting the squad is still short of their peak.
"I think we are still not at our best so we need some time, we need to work on our fitness as well, to get into the rhythm," said Gvardiol.
His caution is understandable. Maresca has been open about the difficulties of getting the group back up to speed following a long summer, with several players lacking full sharpness after their World Cup exertions.
A Midfield Transformed
The challenge is compounded by a summer of significant departures. The exits of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders have stripped experience from the heart of the side, leaving a hole in midfield that even Ayyoub Bouaddi's €100 million arrival from Lille may not immediately fill.
Further forward, the attacking depth has been thinned by the departures of Savinho, who joined Tottenham for £85 million, and Omar Marmoush, who followed on a season-long loan with an option to buy for £50 million plus £10 million in add-ons. The squad is undoubtedly lighter, and Gvardiol knows it.
"What I think is we need everyone. Everyone needs to be at his best, at their best - especially now some players have gone," he added.
The response, he insists, must be collective. "It's not going to be easy, but our mentality - we're going to push, we're going to fight for it, and everyone needs to be ready. Everyone needs to sometimes step up and take the responsibility and fight for this badge, fight for this club."
New Faces, New Hope
There is fresh blood on the horizon, with City set to announce the signing of Palmeiras winger Allan Elias, and understood to have agreed a €140 million fee for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez. Those arrivals will bolster a squad that Maresca is still assessing, as evidenced by Rayan Cherki being left on the bench against Bournemouth before conjuring two assists in the closing stages to turn the game on its head.
With the Champions League and Carabao Cup both looming in the coming weeks, the need for a fully fit, fully committed squad has rarely been more pressing. Gvardiol's message is clear: the badge demands it.
