Gonzalez digs in as City's midfield rebuild gathers pace
Nico Gonzalez is not going anywhere without a fight. Despite City's willingness to talk business with Newcastle United, the 24-year-old is adamant his future lies at the Etihad.
Fabrizio Romano reports the Spanish midfielder remains convinced he can be an important player under Enzo Maresca and believes he is capable of showing his best form. That is a stance worth noting, given the noise around a potential departure.
Newcastle have already held talks over a move for Gonzalez, with the Manchester Evening News confirming on Wednesday that discussions had taken place between the clubs. The Magpies are looking to strengthen their midfield before the window closes, and City are quite open to doing business.
Yet there is no suggestion an agreement has been reached. Not yet, anyway.
The context here matters. This is not simply a case of a fringe player being shuffled out. City have already lost Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders this summer, leaving a significant hole in the middle of the park. The club are closing in on Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi and have identified Roma's Manu Koné as a potential target.
The Guardian reports Gonzalez could be allowed to leave before the deadline as part of that wider midfield reshaping. A £50m arrival from Porto in February 2025, he has never quite established himself as a guaranteed starter.
For now, though, the player himself is digging in. Whether that proves enough to keep him at the club remains to be seen, but the message from his camp is clear enough.
