Nico Gonzalez Ends Exit Talk with Clear Message
Nico Gonzalez has moved to end any speculation over his future, insisting he is settled at Manchester City and has no plans to move on this summer. The Spanish midfielder, speaking to Sam Lee of The Athletic, was unequivocal about his intentions.
“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay, I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.”
The comments arrive as City’s midfield picture begins to take shape. Mateo Kovacic has also confirmed he will stay for the 2026-27 campaign, meaning Enzo Maresca now has clarity over two key options in the middle of the park.
Fighting for His Place
Gonzalez is under no illusions about the competition. He acknowledged that no player is guaranteed a starting spot under Maresca and that he will have to earn his minutes.
“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position. That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”
It is a pragmatic outlook, but one that reflects the reality at a club where depth is a strength. The former Porto man knows he must fight for his place, and he seems more than willing to do so.
A Crucial Season Ahead
The upcoming campaign looms as a significant one for Gonzalez. During the first half of last season, he stepped into Rodri’s role superbly, helping lay the foundation for the second half of the 2025-26 campaign. That form underlined his value, and with Rodri’s future still uncertain, Gonzalez could become even more important.
He is a bonafide number six, capable of anchoring midfield and linking with the likes of Elliot Anderson. Given the role Maresca values so highly, Gonzalez’s presence offers reassurance.
Depending on how the remaining weeks of the transfer window unfold, his importance may only grow. For now, though, City fans can take comfort in knowing that one of their key midfielders is fully committed to the cause.
