Cody Gakpo could miss Liverpool's meeting with Manchester City after limping out of the Netherlands' Nations League clash with Serbia.

The forward was withdrawn early in the fixture, having taken a heavy challenge from Saša Lukić that left him needing treatment on the pitch. He could not continue. The concern was immediate, and it stretched well beyond the Dutch camp.

The damage was done to his lower left leg, with the ankle the area under scrutiny. Medical staff will assess the full extent of it once he is back on Merseyside.

For Liverpool, the timing could hardly be worse. City visit Anfield straight after the international break, and the prospect of facing them without some of their leading attacking players is an awkward one to swallow. Gakpo has been in sublime form this season, the primary creative engine and goal threat in the side.

He is not the only worry. Alexander Isak withdrew from the Sweden squad with a thigh problem, returning early to Liverpool's AXA Training Centre for evaluation and recovery. Sweden manager Graham Potter described the issue as not long-term, but serious enough to rule the striker out of action.

Two focal attacking options lost in quick succession leaves the coaching staff short on frontline firepower, and there is a certain irony in a squad still unbeaten in the Premier League this season suddenly looking thin where it matters. Gakpo's potential absence, combined with Isak's fitness race, represents a severe blow.

Whether either man makes it back in time for City's visit remains to be seen. For now, the treatment room at Anfield is busier than anyone would like at this stage of the campaign.
