A Genuine Selection Headache
Manchester City head into the new Premier League season with a problem most clubs would love to have. Two elite options for the number ten role, both with compelling cases, and only one shirt available against Bournemouth at the Etihad on Sunday.
Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki have spent the summer making their respective pitches. Foden, who signed a contract extension earlier this summer, has had the run of things in preseason. He started all three friendlies in the role, and again in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal.
Cherki, by contrast, is playing catch-up. He only returned to City last Wednesday after a frustrating World Cup with France, where he spent most of the tournament on the periphery of Didier Deschamps' squad. His first competitive action of the summer came as a 60th-minute substitute against Arsenal.
Patchy Form and a Point to Prove
Foden's case is built on continuity rather than brilliance. His form across the friendlies and the Community Shield has been patchy, and he is coming off a difficult 2024-25 season that tailed off after a bright start to 2025-26. Missing out on England's World Cup squad would have stung.
Yet he has a full preseason behind him, something Cherki cannot claim. That alone might be enough to earn Foden the nod against Bournemouth.
A Cameo That Caught the Eye
Cherki's brief appearance against Arsenal offered a glimpse of what he brings. He completed 29 of his 33 passes and created two chances. One saw Antoine Semenyo have a shot saved by David Raya; the other was a dangerous low cross across the six-yard box that was just behind Semenyo.
It was a cameo that suggested he is ready, even if his preparation has been fractured.
The Verdict
If the choice were made purely on preseason minutes, Foden starts on Sunday. If it were made on the sharpness of Cherki's cameo, the debate gets interesting. As things stand, Foden looks the favourite to begin the 2026-27 season in the role.
But with Cherki now fully back in the fold, the competition is only just beginning.
