England's 7-0 win over Croatia in the Nations League on Saturday was a statement result. For Manchester City, it was a mixed night of watching briefs.
Guehi's night to remember
Marc Guehi started in defence and was arguably England's most assured performer. The 26-year-old completed 92 of 97 passes, made nine recoveries and blocked two Croatia shots. His most telling contribution came when he intercepted City teammate Josko Gvardiol and set in motion the move that ended with Harry Kane opening the scoring.
That moment summed up the night's contrasting fortunes for the two defenders.
Gvardiol's difficult evening
Gvardiol's attempt to play out from the back in the eighth minute was intercepted, leading directly to England's opening goal. It set the tone for a testing night against a rampant England side.
Anderson's mixed bag
Elliot Anderson was one of two central midfielders and produced five crosses, including the one that teed up Kane's second goal. He also combined neatly with Bukayo Saka to evade Gvardiol in the build-up to another chance. But there was a sloppy giveaway in the first half that nearly handed Croatia a goal, and another squandered ball that led to Kovacic's best chance of the game.
None of City's four players found the net, but the night belonged to England — and Guehi in particular.
