The Clock Ticks on a Busy Window
As the transfer window hurtles towards its final hours, the picture at the Etihad is one of significant overhaul. The departures of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, and Rodri, coupled with Bernardo Silva's earlier exit, have left the midfield looking decidedly different to the one that started last season. Add Omar Marmoush's season-long loan to Tottenham Hotspur into the mix, and it's clear this has been a summer of transition.
Yet the most intriguing thread might be the one still dangling: the Cody Gakpo deal, which could be finalised today.
Gakpo's Timing
The Liverpool forward was in action for his current club in their 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, setting up Alexander Isak for one of the goals. It's a reminder that he remains very much a Premier League performer, even as speculation swirls around a potential move to City.
If the deal goes through, it would add another attacking option to a squad that has already seen some reshuffling. But it's the midfield that has required the most attention.
Early Answers in the Engine Room
Elliot Anderson has been superb in his first two games for the Blues, looking an excellent piece of business. Ayyoub Bouaddi made his debut against Crystal Palace, while Marc Guehi has been deployed in midfield in the opener. The early signs are encouraging, but the loss of so many senior figures in one window is a lot to absorb.
It's a lot to ask of new arrivals to hit the ground running, but the early evidence suggests the recruitment team have found some players who can.
The Grealish Conundrum
Elsewhere, there's the matter of Jack Grealish. Left out of the squad entirely for the 4-1 drubbing of Crystal Palace, his future is the subject of increasing speculation. There is talk of a return to Everton, where he spent last season on loan, and Sunderland are also said to be interested.
It would be a significant call to let him go, but the writing may already be on the wall.
Loan Moves
Youngster Stephen Mfuni has joined EPL side Coventry City for the season on loan, the most notable of a series of development moves. It's the kind of deal that often goes under the radar but could prove important down the line.
As the deadline approaches, the focus will be on whether Gakpo becomes a City player and what happens with Grealish. One thing is certain: this squad will look very different when the window closes.
