Manchester City begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title on Wednesday night, and Enzo Maresca has a chance to shuffle his pack against Championship opposition.

Norwich City are the visitors to the Etihad, a side currently mid-table in the second tier and yet to keep a clean sheet all season. City, by contrast, have won every game since the campaign began, five straight victories stretching back to the 2-1 win over Bournemouth on opening day.

The team news is where this tie gets interesting. Geronimo Rulli, re-signed in the summer, is in line for his debut in goal. Abdukodir Khusanov should return to the starting XI, with Ruben Dias potentially partnering him at the back — Marc Guehi, so impressive in recent weeks, is due a rest.

At left back, Nico O'Reilly could make his return in that position, though Rayan Ait-Nouri is pushing for the spot. The Algerian may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Further forward, the absence of Erling Haaland opens the door for Antoine Semenyo to move from left-wing to striker, with a debut for Allan on the cards. Iliman Ndiaye, fresh from a superb cameo in the Manchester derby, is expected to start.

In midfield, Ayyoub Bouaddi should be joined by either Enzo Fernandez or Elliot Anderson. Maresca's latest press conference suggested that Ryan McAidoo, Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite will feature, though all three are likely to be substitutes. Jeremy Doku could make an appearance, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready in time.

One player definitely missing is Phil Foden, suspended after his red card in the derby.

Norwich arrive with their own injury concerns and an inconsistent start to the 26/27 campaign. They have won three and drawn four of their Championship games, scoring 13 and conceding 13. A defence that leaks goals against a City side that has forgotten how to drop points does not bode well for the visitors.

Probable City XI: Rulli; Nunes, Dias, Khusanov, O'Reilly; Bouaddi, Anderson; Allan, Ndiaye, Cherki; Semenyo.
