Manchester City are the frontrunners to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert, according to reports, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain also monitoring the teenager.
TEAMtalk claim that Enzo Maresca's side attempted to bring the 17-year-old to the Etihad during the summer transfer window, when they were prepared to pay upwards of €20m (£17m) for him. Dortmund rejected the approach at the time, but Albert's contract expires at the end of the season, and his limited first-team opportunities suggest he is unlikely to sign an extension.
Born in South Carolina, Albert had spells at Carolina Elite Soccer, San Diego Surf and LA Galaxy before joining Dortmund in the summer of 2024. He impressed for the German club's second string in the regional leagues last season, earning a first-team debut against Freiburg in April. Head coach Niko Kovac has handed him two further appearances this season, against HEBC Hamburg in the German Cup and Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
On the international stage, USA boss Mauricio Pochettino gave Albert his first senior caps during the last international break, and the forward scored his first goal in his second game against Chile.
City's pursuit faces two significant obstacles. Firstly, UK visa rules prevent the club from signing foreign players under the age of 18, meaning any official move would have to wait until Albert's birthday in late May. Secondly, the club's appeal against breaches of Premier League FFP regulations could influence the player's willingness to move to the Etihad if it fails.
With Chelsea and PSG also considering a move, City will need to navigate these hurdles carefully if they are to secure the highly-rated youngster's signature.
