Midfield shuffle at the Etihad

Manchester City are weighing up a surprise move for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, with Real Madrid finally ready to test their resolve over Rodri. The Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has reported that Los Blancos are set to submit an opening offer in the region of €50-60m for the Spanish midfielder, who has reportedly turned down a contract extension at the Etihad because he wants to join the Bernabeu side. Personal terms are said to be already agreed on a deal running until 2030.

City have already moved decisively this summer. Elliot Anderson arrived from Nottingham Forest in a big-money deal, and the club are hotly anticipating the arrival of Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, who carries an £85m price tag. But with Mateo Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez both available for sale, sources suggest there is still space in the squad for a player of Fernandez's calibre should the opportunity arise. A double swoop for Bouaddi and Fernandez could cost the Blues a combined £200m.

Fernandez's Chelsea future in doubt

Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League last season, and while Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro have been made untouchable this summer, Fernandez's future remains unresolved. The Argentine has flirted with Real Madrid, and the Blues are only willing to let him go if a club matches or exceeds the £106.9m they paid Benfica for him in 2023. So far, only Marc Cucurella has left Stamford Bridge, joining Real Madrid for around €60m.

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris weighed in on the situation, telling Boyle Sports that if a player doesn't want to be at the club, they should be allowed to leave — but not for cheap. 'Letting them go doesn't mean letting them go for cheap,' he said. 'The value might be there after the World Cup he had. It might be the best opportunity to try and claw back as much of the fee we shelled out as possible.'

Morris added that if Fernandez wants to stay, he's a proven performer, but if not, the quicker he leaves, the better. 'I am sure Xabi Alonso wouldn't mind having him in the squad if he wants to be there,' he said. 'But if he doesn't, the quicker he leaves, the better.'

City's interest adds another layer to a transfer window that already promises significant change. Enzo Maresca's side begin pre-season against Inter Milan on 1st August, and the Rodri situation will dominate the headlines until it is resolved one way or another.
