Alleyne's Burnley loan all but confirms City's fifth-choice centre-back
Max Alleyne's path to first-team football at Manchester City will take another detour. The young defender is poised to spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Burnley, a move that looks set to settle the question of who fills the fifth-choice centre-back role at the Etihad.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Alleyne is due to complete his medical with Burnley tomorrow. The deal is a straightforward loan, with no option for the Clarets to make the move permanent. Come the end of the season, Alleyne returns to City.
The Championship, it seems, is where Alleyne has made his case. Last season, on loan at Watford, he looked every bit a very good centre-back at that level, performing exceptionally well in a side that was anything but settled. His form was such that City hauled him back in January, when injuries had ripped through the defence.
He stepped up in that hour of need, showing enough to suggest he will develop into a proper centre-back in time. But with a full season at Burnley ahead of him, City have evidently decided his education is best served away from Manchester.
That leaves the pecking order fairly clear. Vitor Reis looks set to be City's first-choice centre-back, and with Alleyne out of the picture, the fifth-choice spot now seems obvious.
