The domino effect
There is a certain logic to the transfer window that rarely gets the attention it deserves. One club signs a midfielder, and suddenly another club's entire summer changes shape. Right now, Chelsea's pursuit of Manu Koné might be the single most important move for Manchester City's own business.
According to Sky in Italy, Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal with Roma for the France international, with a fee in the region of £52m under discussion. Personal terms are said to be sorted, and the Blues are trying to get it over the line before the window shuts.
Koné, 25, joined Roma from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2024 and has since established himself in the France setup. He is not a name that would have been on many Premier League radars this time last year, but he fits the profile Chelsea have been chasing all summer.
The Fernández question
Here is where it gets interesting for City. Koné is being lined up as a direct replacement for Enzo Fernández, with talks continuing over the Argentina international's potential move to the Etihad. Chelsea have made it clear they would sell Fernández for the right price, provided they can bring in cover first.
That is the crucial bit. Chelsea are not going to let Fernández go and leave themselves short in midfield. Koné arriving changes that calculation entirely.
The stumbling block remains the fee. Chelsea value Fernández at around £120m, and City are yet to reach an agreement on that figure. It is a lot of money, even by the standards of this window, and it is hard to see it being resolved quickly.
On the player's side, things look more straightforward. Fernández is reportedly open to the move, and personal terms are not expected to cause any trouble if the clubs can strike a deal.
So the pieces are there. Chelsea get their replacement, City get their midfielder, and everybody moves on. The only question is whether the two clubs can bridge that gap between valuation and offer before the deadline.
