Vitor Reis sends Maresca a quiet reminder in Inter draw
Pre-season friendlies rarely tell you much. They are usually about fitness, about minutes in legs, about avoiding the sort of injury that derails a campaign before it has properly begun. Every so often, though, a player uses one to make a point.
Vitor Reis did exactly that in the second half of City's 1-1 draw with Inter Milan on Saturday.
The Brazilian centre-back was one of five players introduced by Enzo Maresca at the interval, and the shuffle that followed was significant. With Max Alleyne also coming on, Abdukodir Khusanov shifted across to right-back, while Rayan Ait-Nouri took up the left-back berth. Reis, in the middle of it all, was handed the responsibility of anchoring a reworked defence.
He responded with a display that was quietly authoritative. In his 45 minutes on the pitch, Reis completed 44 of his 46 passes, a return that underpinned City's dominance of the second period. But there was more to his game than simply recycling possession. Nine of those passes went into the final third, evidence of a willingness to play forward that will not have gone unnoticed.
There were moments, too, when he stepped out of defence entirely. On several occasions Reis drifted into midfield as a number six and looked entirely at home there, a versatility that offers Maresca options beyond the obvious.
Defensively, he was just as assured. He won every aerial duel he contested and produced one crucial intervention in the latter stages, timing a challenge under pressure in a way that spoke to his reading of the game.
Reis spent last season on loan with Girona, learning how to play in Europe ahead of a potential role in the City squad. If that was the education, this was the exam — and he passed comfortably.
Whether it earns him a permanent role remains to be seen. Against a side of Inter's calibre, though, Reis showed he is more than ready to be part of the conversation.
