Belgian Move Confirmed

Manchester City have confirmed that Sverre Nypan will spend the 2026-27 campaign on loan at Lommel SK, a City Football Group side in the Belgian Pro League.

The Norwegian midfielder joined City from Rosenborg last summer carrying a reputation as one of Europe's elite young midfield prospects. Things haven't gone entirely to plan since.

He was immediately sent to Middlesbrough. That spell didn't work out and he returned to City in January, training with Pep Guardiola's first team and playing for the EDS without ever featuring for the senior side.

Why Lommel

According to Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News, City believe Nypan will get regular football in Belgium. Hugo Viana, the club's Director of Football, was involved in the decision — which Bajkowski notes is unusual for a loan of this nature.

There might have been more glamorous destinations available, but that rather misses the point. Nypan needs to play. Regularly. After a difficult spell at Middlesbrough, another loan spent watching from the bench would have been damaging. Lommel offers a reset.

A Critical Season

This feels like a significant moment for the young midfielder. His ability in midfield and versatility across several roles make him an exciting prospect, but potential only gets you so far. This season needs to be the one where he takes a step forward.

If he does, a path back to City could open up. If he struggles in Belgium, the road gets considerably harder.

The fact that he remains within the City Football Group structure is a positive sign. The hierarchy will keep a close eye on his progress — which suggests they still rate him highly. Now it's down to Nypan to deliver.
