Ghana's World Cup journey is over
Antoine Semenyo and Ghana are heading home from the World Cup after a last-32 defeat to Colombia in Kansas City.
Néstor Lorenzo's side controlled the game from start to finish, despite losing forward Jhon Córdoba to a groin strain inside the first eight minutes. Substitute Luis Suárez delivered a cross from the right in the 14th minute and Jhon Arias volleyed home at the back post to put Colombia ahead.
From there, Los Cafeteros dictated the tempo. They exposed Ghana's backline repeatedly while remaining untroubled at the other end. Luis Díaz had a second-half goal ruled out for offside, and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made several saves to keep the scoreline respectable, but the Black Stones never looked like mounting a comeback.
Ghana failed to register a single shot on target all evening. Colombia secured a 1-0 win and a Round of 16 date with Switzerland in Vancouver.
Semenyo's tournament ends without the fireworks some might have hoped for. The City forward managed 38 touches, 13 accurate passes, three touches in the opposition box and one chance created. He won six ground duels and completed two successful dribbles — the most of any Ghana player — but could not find a way through a disciplined Colombian defence.
He'll be back at the CFA shortly, ready for pre-season under Enzo Maresca.
