Spain's midfield general reminds everyone of his value
Rodri produced a performance for the ages in Spain's 2-0 World Cup semi-final win over France. The Ballon d'Or winner was at his dominant best, dictating the tempo and snuffing out danger as La Roja booked their place in the final.
The midfield battle was always going to decide this one. France boasted Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise going forward, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot in the middle. Spain countered with Rodri and Fabiàn Ruiz, plus Dani Olmo dropping in.
France were simply overmatched.
Mikel Oyarzabal's first-half penalty and Pedro Porro's second-half strike sealed the win, but the story was Rodri. He covered every blade of grass, read the game superbly and made 11 duels won — more than anyone else on the pitch. Tchouaméni and Rabiot managed six each.
It was a reminder of what he does best.
The 2025-26 season was a frustrating one for Rodri at City. Niggling injuries stopped him from making the impact he'd have liked. But he's clearly over those issues now. His form at this World Cup has been outstanding.
And there's a contract situation bubbling away in the background.
Rodri's current deal expires in 12 months. Watching him at this tournament, based on his importance and standing at the club, City simply have to extend it. Yes, he's 30. Yes, he suffered a serious knee injury early in the 2024-25 season. It took time for him to get back to his best.
But he remains integral to this squad.
As the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders enter a new era, they'll need Rodri now and in the future. He's an inspirational figure who lifts those around him. The longer City can keep him, the better.
Last night's performance was arguably his best of the tournament. It was a masterclass from the best number six in world football — and a clear message about what City must do next.
