Maresca's Dilemma
Enzo Maresca finds himself in an awkward spot. The new City boss has been impressed by Tijjani Reijnders during pre-season, yet the Dutch midfielder's patience has limits.
Sources indicate Reijnders could push for an exit if he isn't guaranteed regular football at the Etihad. The 28-year-old had hoped to prove his worth to the new manager after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola, and so far he has done exactly that — starting a couple of games and impressing on the Asia tour.
Seeking Assurances
But goodwill only stretches so far. Reijnders is expected to seek assurances about his role this season. Should those conversations fail to convince him he's part of the starting XI plans, the midfielder may well look elsewhere.
He will speak to the manager about his situation and plans, and if he isn't going to feature as part of the starting XI, then he could look to move on.
Interest is hardly scarce. Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest both linked. Forest, in particular, look well placed financially after Elliot Anderson's sale, and the £55million price tag isn't expected to be an issue.
Forest Fit Question
Whether Reijnders would be a natural replacement for Anderson remains up for debate — their roles differ. Still, there's a growing sense Forest could tempt him away.
City, for now, aren't planning to let anyone go until arrivals arrive. That leaves Reijnders waiting on Maresca's call, with the clock ticking toward the window's close.
