Rayan Ait-Nouri's Manchester City career has yet to ignite, and the first international break of the 2026/27 season has arrived with the left-back still awaiting his first Premier League minute under Enzo Maresca.
That statistic alone would raise eyebrows. But the wider picture is more complicated still. City's summer signing from Wolves — a £31 million arrival last year — has managed just 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup and 15 in the Champions League. For a 25-year-old Algeria international, that is not a body of work. It is a footnote.
Juventus, operating in the Serie A title conversation this season, attempted to address the situation in the summer. They proposed a loan deal with a fee attached and an option to buy. City rejected the approach, unwilling to let a recently acquired defender leave on temporary terms so quickly after his arrival.
Ait-Nouri was understood to be open to the move given his lack of playing time at the Etihad Stadium. But the clubs could not reach an agreement before the window closed.
What has emerged since is perhaps more surprising. Representatives of the defender explored a possible loan move to Old Trafford on the final day of the summer transfer window. That enquiry — to United, of all places — did not progress, but it speaks to a player and an entourage aware that something has to change.
There is a counterargument, of course. Ait-Nouri has netted twice on City's pre-season tour and has spoken of his desire to become a greater goalscoring threat. Those goals offered a glimpse of the attacking full-back Wolves sold. The problem is that pre-season promise has not translated into competitive minutes.
Juventus plan to renew their interest in January, according to reports. Whether City's stance shifts by then remains to be seen. A busy autumn schedule — Champions League fixtures and a return of Premier League action in October — offers Ait-Nouri the chance to force his way into the picture. If he cannot, the conversation will only grow louder.
For now, the defender remains a City player. But the first international break of the season has a way of clarifying things. Ait-Nouri is yet to appear in the top-flight under his new manager. That is the fact that matters most.
