Full-back's technical gifts suit new manager's system

Enzo Maresca's arrival at Manchester City appears close, with reports last week suggesting a compensation package has been agreed between City and Chelsea. The Italian's tactical approach differs slightly from Pep Guardiola's, and those nuances could elevate certain players.

Rayan Ait-Nouri may be one of them.

Maresca favoured inverted full-backs during his time at Chelsea, using Reece James and Marc Cucurella to create midfield overloads. Both are technically gifted players, and the role added another dimension to their game. Cucurella, in particular, became an attacking weapon from left-back.

Ait-Nouri possesses similar qualities. He is technically strong, a capable dribbler, and can create chances for team-mates. At his best, he is difficult for opponents to handle in the final third.

Competition for places

His first season at City was disrupted by AFCON involvement and injuries, limiting his impact. There were glimpses of his ability, but not enough to suggest he had secured a regular spot. Maresca's system could change that.

It will not be straightforward. Josko Gvardiol, comfortable at both left-back and centre-back, has already shown he can thrive in an inverted or attacking role. Nico O'Reilly is another option who could benefit from the new manager's approach.

The challenge is clear. But based on how Maresca likes his full-backs to operate, Ait-Nouri has the raw materials to fit the mould. If he can establish himself, City gain another quality attacking outlet.
