Midfielder's Exit Path Becomes Clear

The picture around Nico Gonzalez's future at Manchester City has sharpened considerably. With the club willing to sell and Newcastle United closing in, the Spanish midfielder's time at the Etihad appears to be drawing to a close.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have almost agreed on a deal that would see Gonzalez join Newcastle's rebuild. Talks with the player are reportedly ongoing, with the aim of sealing the move early this week.

Newcastle are eager to sign Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

Gonzalez, who arrived from FC Porto in January 2025, has spent 18 months at City. During that time, he showed his versatility by stepping into defensive midfield during Rodri's absence last season. Yet despite that contribution, the club have decided it would be better to sell him.

For his part, Gonzalez is said to be happy to stay and fight for his place. But with City willing to listen to offers and Newcastle pushing hard, the momentum appears to be towards a departure.

The situation was underlined before the weekend's win over Bournemouth, when Marc Guehi started in midfield ahead of the Croatian international. That selection, combined with the club's agreement with Lille to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi, suggests City are already planning for life without him.
