The background
Pedro Neto's future is suddenly moving again, and not in the direction City supporters might have hoped.
Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Al-Hilal have agreed personal terms with the Chelsea winger, and that the London club are now willing to listen to offers in the region of €60m. That figure matters because Neto has been on City's radar for weeks — not as a headline signing, but as a contingency.
The 26-year-old Portugal international is the man City have in mind should Savinho depart for Tottenham. Spurs have kept up their pursuit of the Brazilian all summer, and each passing week makes that possibility feel a little less theoretical.
What happens next
None of this is done yet. An agreement over personal terms is not a completed transfer, and Chelsea still have to thrash out a fee with the Saudi Pro League side. There is also, it should be said, no indication that City have tabled a formal offer for Neto.
What the Al-Hilal interest does is add a layer of urgency. If Neto heads to Saudi Arabia, City lose one of their more obvious replacements for Savinho. That leaves the club with a decision: move for Neto now, or accept that the pool of options is shrinking.
For now, the ball sits with Chelsea and Al-Hilal. City, as ever, are watching.
