Watford emerge as favourites after Coventry U-turn

Stephen Mfuni's path to first-team football has taken another turn, with his proposed loan switch to Coventry City falling through. The Sky Blues have instead set their sights on experienced Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock, leaving the 18-year-old to look elsewhere for minutes.

Watford, it seems, are the obvious answer. The Hornets retain an interest in taking Mfuni back on loan, and they now loom as the favourites to land him at this stage.

It is not hard to see why. Mfuni spent part of last season at Vicarage Road, impressing across eight Championship appearances. He knows the club, the league and the demands of a promotion scrap. That familiarity makes a return an appealing prospect for all parties.

For a defender long earmarked as one to watch, regular senior football is the priority. Coventry's change of heart is a setback, but Watford's interest offers a ready-made alternative.

Nothing is done yet, and these things can drag. But if the Hornets follow through, Mfuni gets continuity, and City get their young defender playing week-in, week-out in a demanding league. That, in the end, is what this is all about.
