Hong Kong test arrives with a youthful edge
Manchester City's first preseason friendly kicks off later today, with Enzo Maresca's side taking on Inter Milan at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong. It is the first chance to see the new-look Blues in competitive action, and the starting lineup will reflect a squad stripped of its World Cup contingent.
Plenty of senior players are still on holiday after the 2026 World Cup, which means the Asia tour doubles as an extended audition for the academy.
McAidoo speaks ahead of the Inter clash
Ryan McAidoo is one of the youngsters hoping to catch the eye. The dynamic winger spoke to mancity.com yesterday and made no secret of his excitement about facing Inter. He called it a dream opportunity to test himself against such a formidable opponent.
“We are all talented academy players in different ways and the older players have helped us a lot to keep up with the intensity and do the right things on and off the pitch. We are so grateful to them.”
The gratitude is mutual, in a sense. With so many first-team regulars absent, Maresca will lean on the next generation to carry the load.
Academy names set for minutes
McAidoo is not alone. Divine Mukasa, Claudio Echeverri, Stephen Mfuni, Max Alleyne, Vitor Reis, Xavier Parker, Jaden Heskey and Mahamadou Sangare are all expected to get game time under the new manager.
That is a serious wedge of young talent to throw into a match against European opposition. Inter are no pushovers, and this will be a proper examination of where City's youth ranks stand.
A winger's window
McAidoo comes across as eager to impress, and the timing works in his favour. City need a right winger, and he looks ready to step up from the EDS level.
“As young players you all want to play in the highest level of games, it’s what we dream of. So hopefully we all get our opportunity to show what we can do against Inter.”
That quote does the rounds on its own. The kid wants the ball, and tonight he might just get it.
