Winger heads back to France for first-team minutes

Mathys Detourbet has joined AS Monaco on a season-long loan, with the deal extendable for a further year and an option to buy included. The 19-year-old only arrived at Manchester City this summer following a breakout campaign in Ligue 2.

Born in Troyes in April 2007, Detourbet came through the academy at ESTAC Troyes and signed his first professional contract in May 2025. He quickly established himself as a key figure, playing 37 matches across the 2025-26 season and contributing four goals and seven assists — form that helped Troyes push for promotion and convinced City to move for him at the end of the campaign.

His explosive, direct style and quality in one-versus-one situations had drawn attention across France. Rather than integrate him immediately into Enzo Maresca's first-team setup, City have sent him back to French football to continue his development at a higher level.

According to an official announcement from Monaco, the arrangement is renewable for a further campaign, which would then be accompanied by an option to buy. The structure gives both clubs flexibility: Monaco can assess Detourbet over a longer period, while director of football Hugo Viana has a clear framework within which to evaluate the winger's future.

At Monaco, Detourbet links up with several players he has represented France alongside at youth level. He has accumulated 18 caps and five goals across age groups from U17s through to U20s.

The move follows a well-established pattern at City, who have frequently used loan moves to accelerate the development of promising players not yet deemed ready for the demands of first-team football. The inclusion of a potential second season and an option to buy suggests Monaco see Detourbet as someone capable of establishing himself over the longer term.

For the player, it is an opportunity to continue his rapid ascent in familiar surroundings, stepping up from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1 with a club that has built a strong reputation for developing young attacking talent. Whether this loan becomes the first step toward a long-term future at City or a permanent move to the Stade Louis II remains to be seen, but it is a sensible pathway for a player whose progress the club will now follow closely from afar.
