After the international break, the Blues play five matches in sixteen days across three competitions. It is a stretch that will introduce Maresca to several unfamiliar experiences: a Champions League night, a Manchester derby, and the squad rotation that juggling commitments demands.

It begins with Coventry at the Etihad, a fixture that should offer a gentle re-entry. Three days later, City are in Portugal, and the tone shifts. Porto away is a step up from anything this squad has faced so far, and it represents Maresca's first taste of European football as City manager — complete with the quick turnaround from domestic duty that the competition demands.

The Derby Looms

Then comes the one everyone marks on the calendar. Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford, a first competitive meeting with United since Maresca took the job. It will be City's third game in nine days, and comfortably the biggest domestic fixture of his opening weeks. And of course, United are back (again).

Four days after the derby, Norwich arrive at the Etihad in the Carabao Cup. Expect changes. Ayyoub Bouaddi and some of the younger players could get minutes, with one eye on the Premier League match that follows three days later.

Rotation, Europe, and a Reckoning

The final fixture sees Sunderland visit the Etihad. By then, Maresca will have led City into Europe, navigated a derby, and been forced to rotate across three competitions. The results matter, but so does how he manages the load.
