City bring back Northern Ireland international goalkeeper

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday. The 21-year-old goalkeeper has signed a five-year contract running until 2031 and will immediately join QPR on loan for the 2026-27 season.

Charles is no stranger to the club, having spent time in City's youth system before moving to Sheffield Wednesday. The Northern Ireland international is now back, and the plan is clear: a season in the Championship to prepare for a potential future at the Etihad.

Speaking after the move, Charles made no secret of his excitement.

“To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family. I know first hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future.”

He also acknowledged the role the loan will play in his development.

“City take the development of young players very seriously so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too. I'll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper.”

A goalkeeper with the right attributes

Charles has the tools to make the grade. He is a quality shot-stopper, something he demonstrated regularly at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was often kept busy behind a struggling side. He is also proficient with his feet, which fits the way Enzo Maresca wants his goalkeeper to play in build-up.

There was some thought that Charles might slot straight in as City's second-choice goalkeeper, particularly with doubts persisting around James Trafford's future. Instead, City have opted to send him on loan, giving him the chance to establish himself as QPR's number one and accelerate his development.

For now, it is a season at Loftus Road. If he shows the signs many expect, the path back to Manchester could be a short one.
