Homecoming for Northern Ireland international
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, with the 20-year-old returning to a club where he previously spent time in the academy setup before leaving for Hillsborough in the summer of 2021.
Charles has signed a five-year contract that runs until the summer of 2031, and will immediately join Queens Park Rangers on loan for the coming Championship season.
The Northern Ireland international made his senior professional debut for Wednesday in January 2024 and went on to make 36 appearances across all competitions for the south Yorkshire club. He has also earned 12 caps for his country to date.
There is a family dimension to the deal too — Charles's elder brother Shea is a former Manchester City player.
What the player said
Speaking after the announcement, Charles described the move as deeply significant on a personal level.
“To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment for me and my family. I know first hand what a special club City is and I'm so excited about the future.”
The goalkeeper also addressed the loan move to QPR, framing it as a deliberate part of his development pathway rather than a setback.
“City take development of young players very seriously so I know my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player. I'll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper.”
Viana's view
Director of football Hugo Viana confirmed the club had been tracking Charles's progress for some time.
“Pierce is someone whose progress we've been following closely, and we're delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City. Pierce has already learned a lot during his time at Sheffield Wednesday but is still very young and hungry to further progress and develop.”
Viana added that Charles “knows the club and is very much aligned with the values we all share”, describing the club as “very happy to have secured Pierce's signing”.
The financial details
It is understood that City will pay an initial £3 million guaranteed fee for Charles, with add-ons and future milestones potentially pushing the total past £10 million.
The structure — a five-year deal followed immediately by a Championship loan — suggests City view Charles as a future first-team prospect rather than a short-term squad option. A full season of regular Championship football at QPR should provide the kind of high-intensity environment the club's sporting structure considers the most effective next step for a young goalkeeper at his stage of development.
