Agent reveals Magpies came close to landing Uzbekistan defender

The agent of Abdukodir Khusanov has confirmed Newcastle United held substantive talks with the defender before he joined Manchester City in January 2025.

Gairat Khasbiullin, who represents the Uzbekistan international, said the Magpies were the only club to progress beyond initial interest and into genuine negotiations.

“Newcastle. The others may have shown interest, just like many other teams. It never got to the point of concrete talks,” Khasbiullin told Sport Express, as relayed by Sport Witness.

Khusanov arrived from Lens in a deal that ranked among the more eye-catching winter window moves of recent years. His performances in Ligue 1 had drawn attention from several prominent European clubs, though Khasbiullin’s account suggests only Newcastle had advanced conversations.

The agent revealed the relationship with Newcastle has remained warm despite the deal falling through.

“We maintain a warm relationship with them. I think that someday a player from Uzbekistan will end up at Newcastle,” he said.

Khasbiullin added that the goodwill has been preserved through ongoing contact, including dinners when he visits England and a standing offer of a box at St James’ Park.

Khusanov has established himself as a regular starter in City’s defence under the management structures overseen by director of football Hugo Viana. His debut season brought EFL Cup and FA Cup winners’ medals.

Newcastle remain active in the summer market, while new City manager Enzo Maresca continues to assess every member of his inherited squad. The agent’s candid remarks confirm the Magpies have maintained their interest in a player they came closer to signing than previously understood.
