Another temporary move on the cards for forgotten midfielder
Kalvin Phillips is on the verge of heading out on loan for a third consecutive season, with Sheffield United the likely destination. Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News reports that the 30-year-old is close to rejoining the Championship side for the upcoming campaign.
This follows Enzo Maresca's pre-season assessment of his squad, which apparently didn't include the midfielder in his long-term plans. Phillips joined City from Leeds United in 2022 for £45 million but has never established himself at the Etihad.
Since then, he's been shuffled out on loan to West Ham United and Ipswich Town before spending last season at Bramall Lane. That initial spell at Sheffield United was cut painfully short — just three appearances before another injury ended his campaign prematurely.
Despite that truncated stint, the Championship club have remained keen all summer. Phillips still has a contract at the Etihad running until 2028, so a permanent departure hasn't materialised.
Instead, it's another temporary fix for a player who cost a small fortune and has barely played for the Blues. Sheffield United get a midfielder they clearly rate. City get a wage off the books. Everyone moves on, at least for now.
