Another Season Away from City for Bah?
Manchester City's centre-back options are stacked. Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake provide experience at the top level, while Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Max Alleyne and Stephen Mfuni represent the next wave. Somewhere in that queue is Juma Bah.
The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at OGC Nice in Ligue One, making 41 appearances across all competitions and clocking 3,130 minutes. That game time was exactly what he needed. But his performances, while promising, haven't convinced anyone he's ready for a role at City for the 2026-27 season.
Nice struggled badly last term. They had to beat Saint-Étienne in the promotion/relegation play-off just to stay in Ligue One. It was a battle all season, and a learning experience for Bah. His composure on the ball stood out — he's an elegant, ball-playing centre-back. That style perhaps wasn't best suited to a side fighting relegation, where his defensive work was serviceable but occasionally exposed along with his teammates.
The numbers back that up. Bah was strong in possession and aerially dominant, no surprise given his size. But his tackling percentage against dribblers and his rate of completed tackles were well below average. He isn't ready for City yet. That much is clear.
So what next? Another loan move seems the logical step, perhaps to a Premier League club. A permanent transfer with a buy-back clause is another option. Bah has the size, talent and potential to make it in England's top flight. A season playing regularly in the Premier League, thriving and improving his defensive deficiencies against elite competition, could set him up for a path back into City's first team.
It's hard to see Bah involved at the Etihad next season. He doesn't look ready for that jump. But a move to a Premier League club might accelerate his development. That appears to be the next logical step for a defender with the physical and technical tools to make it at the highest level.
