Haaland's quiet landmark steals the show from City's debutants

It was supposed to be about the new faces. Enzo Fernández and Iliman Ndiaye were handed debuts at the Etihad on Saturday, two Deadline Day arrivals finally getting their first taste of Premier League football in a City shirt. The build-up had been dominated by the club's summer spending and the overhaul of Enzo Maresca's squad.

Then Erling Haaland went and did what Erling Haaland does. His 26th-minute header from Antoine Semenyo's cross settled a tight contest against Coventry, but the goal itself was only part of the story. The 26-year-old was quietly adding yet another piece of personal history.

That strike was his 300th goal in all competitions in his top-flight club career, a figure reached in a remarkably efficient 368 appearances. It was also his 20th headed Premier League goal since arriving in the summer of 2022 — more than anyone else in the division over that period. The Norwegian's aerial prowess has become such a fixture of his game that even a milestone like this one can slip under the radar.

Semenyo, released by Fernández in the build-up, did the running; Haaland did the finishing. The goal proved decisive as City edged a 1-0 win to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.
