Erling Haaland to Manchester United is not a story. It is a thought experiment someone had out loud.
The 'Say No' Advice
The advice being aimed at United is simple enough: say no to any notion of signing Haaland and look at two of his Manchester City team-mates instead. That is the shape of the conversation doing the rounds. It is not a transfer rumour so much as a wish list with a byline.
Haaland, of course, plays for City. That is the first and most obvious obstacle. United, for their part, have not been linked with a formal move for him in anything resembling a credible sense. The whole thing reads like a suggestion from the outside looking in — a pundit's hypothetical rather than a negotiation.
The two team-mates in question are not named in the original discussion, which makes the advice even harder to act on. You can tell a club to say no to one thing and yes to two others, but without names it is less a transfer strategy and more a riddle.
What It Actually Says About City
There is a compliment buried in all this, even if it arrives sideways. When the conversation around a rival club starts with 'don't bother with their best player, try these other two instead', it tells you something about the depth of the squad at the Etihad. City do not have one asset worth coveting. They have several.
Whether any of them would be available is a different question entirely, and one the fact list does not answer. The assumption that City would entertain selling to United is doing a lot of heavy lifting in a conversation that has not moved past the suggestion stage.
For now, the transfer window's noise machine has produced another round of hypotheticals. Haaland stays where he is. The two unnamed team-mates stay where they are. And United are being told to say no to something nobody seriously proposed in the first place.
