There are nights when Erling Haaland barely needs an invitation, and this was one of them. The Norwegian's brace carried City to a 2-0 win over Porto at the Estadio do Dragao, a result that felt more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

For long spells this was a contest waiting for someone to grab it. City had the better of the first half without ever really opening the Portuguese champions up. Then, two minutes after the restart, the game took its decisive turn.

The second goal arrived in injury time, and it belonged in large part to Rayan Ait Nouri. Introduced from the bench, the defender did the hard work on the left before finding Haaland free in the box. The finish was typical — calm, precise, rolled into the corner. Game over.

If Haaland will grab the headlines, the performance of Ayyoub Bouaddi deserves its own paragraph. The youngster made his first start for the Blues and looked utterly at home on the European stage. Composed in possession, diligent without it — the sort of display that makes you check his age twice.

What comes next

City will not have long to savour this one. United arrive at the Etihad on Saturday, followed by an EFL Cup meeting with Norwich City. The month then closes with a Premier League home game against Sunderland.
