Versatility and Leadership: Guehi's Impressive Start
Marc Guehi has made an early case for being more than just a reliable defender in this City side. The summer signing started the season in midfield, then slotted back into his natural centre-back role against his former club — and looked comfortable in both.
City's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night made it two victories from two in the Premier League, following the 2-1 opening-day success against Bournemouth. Against Palace, Guehi lined up as the left-sided centre-back alongside Ruben Dias, and the pair kept things tidy at the back.
Enzo Maresca was quick to acknowledge the defender's contribution after the match.
“He was impressive last week against Bournemouth as a midfielder and tonight as a central defender.”
It is not just his performances that have caught the eye. Maresca hinted that Guehi could be among the candidates for the captaincy at City, though he stressed that no decision will be made until the transfer window closes.
“We’ll see we have 2 or 3 days for the transfer window and then to decide for the captains, we will see.”
For a player who has only just arrived, Guehi is already showing the kind of adaptability and calm authority that managers tend to value. Whether he ends up with an armband or not, his start to the season has been quietly impressive.
