Floyd Samba has packed a lot into a few weeks. The 17-year-old scored twice on his Manchester City debut, then turned out for a third different country at youth level.
Germany Call Comes After City Breakthrough
Samba was picked by Germany for a six-nation tournament in Spain. The call arrived shortly after he made his first-team breakthrough at City.
He had already played youth international football for England and France. Now Germany have had a look at him too.
The midfielder made his Germany U19 debut against Ukraine on 27 September. He started and played 53 minutes of a goalless draw.
He started again later in the tournament as Germany finished unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against Czechia.
Two Goals on City Debut
That international fortnight followed a senior debut that could hardly have gone better. Samba scored twice as Enzo Maresca's side beat Norwich City 5-0 in the EFL Cup on 17 September.
He opened the scoring with a first-half header, then added his second after the break. A 17-year-old midfielder scoring twice on his first senior appearance is not a common sight at the Etihad, or anywhere else for that matter.
The goals were one thing. The timing was another. The Germany call came soon after, and Samba has now represented three countries at youth level before his 18th birthday.
Representing different countries at youth level does not necessarily determine which nation a player will eventually represent at senior level. Samba's long-term international future remains open.
For City, the immediate concern is simpler. A teenager who scores twice on his debut and then picks up minutes for a new country is moving quickly. The club will want to make sure the next few weeks are handled as carefully as the last few.
