Enzo Fernández has set his sights on a Buenos Aires homecoming

Manchester City's club-record signing Enzo Fernández has admitted he intends to return to River Plate before his career is out.

The Argentina international, who joined City from Chelsea at the start of September, has spoken openly about his desire to pull on the River shirt again.

“I want to return to River at some point; I've said it several times,” Fernández said. “I'm going to return; I'm sure of it. It's something I really want.”

He added: “I stand by my words and what's on record. If I say it, it's because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did.”

Fernández won the league title with River in 2021, a triumph that came around the time of the Covid pandemic.

City contract no barrier to eventual return

Any move back to South America remains a long way off. The 25-year-old is under a long contract at the Etihad and is currently playing in a slightly deeper role for the Blues.

“Today, I'm here with a long contract at Manchester City,” he said. “There's still a long way to go, but it will happen.”

Fernández has scored once and provided one assist in 11 appearances for City. That follows a productive final season at Chelsea, where he managed 15 goals and seven assists.

Supporters will hope to see the best of their club record signing very soon. For now, his focus is on City. But the pull of River Plate is clearly not going away.
