City's midfield pivot hinges on Lille deal
Manchester City are not actively looking to sell Rodri this summer. The club's preference, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, is to keep hold of the 30-year-old even if he does not sign a new contract. That much is clear.
But there is a scenario in which the Spain international departs. It depends entirely on whether City can first complete the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.
The Morocco international is identified as the long-term heir in the defensive midfield position should Rodri's departure eventually be sanctioned. Concluding that deal at a fee of around £85 million, per previous reports, would resolve the midfield depth concern that makes a Rodri sale untenable. Only then would the Blues consider letting their midfield anchor leave.
Bouaddi's arrival, or that of another midfielder, would change City's calculation and provide the cover needed to make a Rodri sale manageable.
Real Madrid's pursuit
Real Madrid have reached a personal agreement with Rodri. The player has relayed his desire to join the Spanish club to those close to him. His wish to leave the Etihad Stadium is not in meaningful doubt.
Yet the two clubs remain far apart on valuation. Reports from Spain have placed City's asking price at around €80 million. Real Madrid have capped their own offer at €60 million. City value Rodri at significantly more than the reported figures of €50 million being floated in some quarters.
The gap matters because City are prepared to let Rodri see out the remaining year of his deal rather than accept a fee they consider inadequate. Real Madrid's confidence in completing the deal has been reported as high, but that confidence has not yet translated into a bid that matches City's expectations.
For now, the standoff continues. If Bouaddi signs first, the domino could fall. If not, Rodri stays — with or without an extension.
