Manchester City have agreed a deal worth up to £36.3 million to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri, with the highly-rated Algerian now poised to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical ahead of a swift switch to the Etihad.
City are pushing to finalise the move before Tuesday’s 7pm registration deadline, which would allow the 23-year-old to be included in Pep Guardiola’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
The structure of the deal sees City commit to an initial £31 million outlay, with performance-related add-ons taking the total potential fee to £36.3 million. For a player of Aït-Nouri’s dynamism and attacking pedigree, it represents astute business from the Blues.
Aït-Nouri enjoyed a standout 2023–24 season at Molineux, leading all Premier League defenders with 11 goal involvements — a remarkable return that highlights his threat in the final third. Only Leif Davis, Pedro Porro, and Trent Alexander-Arnold created more chances than the French-born full-back, underlining his creative instincts and eye for a decisive pass.
Equally, his dribbling ability saw him complete 63 successful take-ons — second only to Aaron Wan-Bissaka among top-flight defenders — and a hallmark of a player comfortable carrying the ball under pressure. It’s a trait Guardiola has long admired in his full-backs, with Aït-Nouri's tight ball control and speed in transition fitting the mould of previous tactical mainstays in that position.
Yet, it's not just his offensive output that has caught the eye at City. The former Angers man finished the season as the Premier League’s most effective defender at winning possession high up the pitch, recovering the ball more times in the final third than any of his top-flight peers — with only Crystal Palace’s Daniel Muñoz close to matching his numbers.
