City make their move for Lille midfielder

Manchester City have reportedly made their intentions clear to Ayyoub Bouaddi's representatives, telling the Lille midfielder they want him straight into Enzo Maresca's first-team plans. The 19-year-old Morocco international has been on City's radar for some time, with previous reports suggesting an £85m deal could be in the offing.

According to TEAMtalk, City have communicated their vision for Bouaddi directly to those around him, making clear he wouldn't be eased in gradually. They want him now, and they want him as part of the senior setup from day one.

Arsenal, though, haven't gone away. The same report says the Gunners remain 'firmly' in contention for Bouaddi, even if City appear to be the ones pushing hardest at this stage.

A decision that's no longer straightforward

A few years back, this would have been simple. City under Pep Guardiola were the destination for elite talent — trophies all but guaranteed, football at its most refined. Guardiola has gone now, of course, and while Maresca is a capable replacement, that certainty has faded. The squad remains stacked with world-class players, but the pull isn't quite what it was.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are the reigning Premier League champions and may well be favourites to retain the title in 2026/27. That gives Bouaddi a genuine choice between two of English football's heaviest hitters, rather than a one-horse race.

"City have communicated to Bouaddi’s representatives that they want the player to come in straight away and become part of Enzo Maresca’s first-team."

Midfield pathways

Money may tilt things City's way — they can probably offer more — but Arsenal's midfield is already crowded. Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Myles Lewis-Skelly are all competing for minutes at the Emirates, so there's no guarantee Bouaddi walks into regular game time there.

City's need feels more pressing. Rodri isn't getting any younger and has had injury problems in the last couple of years. Bouaddi looks like the kind of long-term successor who could grow into that role over time. The pathway is clearer, the need more acute.

Bouaddi shone in Ligue 1 and caught the eye at the 2026 World Cup before Morocco's exit to France. He's got options, and both clubs know it. This one could run a while yet.
