City's midfield rebuild takes a record-breaking turn
The cheque book is out again at the Etihad, and this time it's a statement of intent. Manchester City have agreed a deal in principle worth €100m (£86m) to bring 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi to the club, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
It's a fee that makes Bouaddi the most expensive teenager in football history. That's not hyperbole; it's the price of doing business when you've decided the future of your midfield is an 18-year-old with a World Cup quarter-final on his CV.
City have been chasing the Morocco international for weeks, with TEAMtalk revealing on August 11 that a record signing was close. Now it's done, or as done as these things get before the ink dries. Ornstein reports the deal is structured as €95m plus €5m in add-ons, with Bouaddi set to sign a five-year contract and the option of a further year.
If he puts pen to paper early in the week, he could be in the squad for Friday night's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace. Debuts don't come much more straightforward than that.
The numbers behind the teenager
Bouaddi isn't just a name plucked from a scouting database. He made his Lille debut three days after his 16th birthday and has since racked up 88 appearances for the French club. He started five of Morocco's six matches at the 2026 World Cup on their run to the quarter-finals, and he played a starring role in Lille's Champions League win over Real Madrid in 2024.
Despite predominantly lining up in a defensive midfield role, he helped Lille finish third in Ligue 1 last season. He's not the finished article — at 18, that would be remarkable — but the raw material is clearly there.
A midfield in transition
The move continues a significant overhaul of City's central options. Having already spent £116m on England World Cup star Elliot Anderson, the club have prioritised midfield as an area to strengthen. The departures of Rodri and Tijani Reinders have left a hole that needs filling, and Bouaddi is part of the answer.
There's also the matter of Enzo Fernandez. City remain interested in the Chelsea midfielder, though they're currently backing off given the Blues' asking price of over £120m. You suspect that particular negotiation might run a while yet.
For now, the focus is on Bouaddi. He's young, he's talented, and he's about to become the most expensive teenager in the history of the sport. No pressure, then.
